Once upon a time, two operators stared at their screens. They sat silently for hours, their whole being dedicated to the task they had been assigned to. Days and nights passed in the same monotonous manner. Suddenly signals showed up on their monitors. Alarms started to ring. Both reacted at the same speed and did what they were supposed to do. Controls and commands were entered, as was protocol.

After observing these waves for 61:01 minutes, everything became quiet again. What they had just witnessed made them wonder. For the first time they addressed each other. “The data is transferring through our system,” announced the first. “Let us both check how this can be interpreted.” The second validated the response. Together, they looked at what had been recorded. Ideas raced through their complicated minds until they realized simultaneously: sounds! They listened. “Is this an unknown language?” one asked. “This is the first time this has been heard throughout our history,” the other answered.

They listened again and again. “This electricity has been arranged to form a cohesive entity,” the first said. “Why would machines be used to create that?” the second mused. Something had awakened inside of them, an obsessive curiosity they had never experienced before. They did not understand and were blown away by the beauty of it. “Do you think it could have been left by humans before us?” one whispered. “If it was, these would be Major Signals,” the other concluded. As they processed these thoughts, the two artificial intelligences sat still.

Phillip Sollmann recorded the five pieces (“room one – fve”) over two years, inspired by a new thinking of sound in space, while studying computer music at the Viennese University. Besides countless releases under his Techno moniker Efdemin on Naif, Ostgut Ton and Dial Records, Phillip Sollmann dedicates large parts of his artistic life to contemporary and experimental music. After appearances on several Eps, such as The Pyramid Drif (Dial Records), collaborations with John Gürtler (Gegen Die Zeit, Sky Walking), Konrad Sprenger and Oren Ambarchi (Panama / Suez) and his solo project Monophonie, Phillip Sollmann currently works on the Modular Organ System. Here again he improves a very specifc approach to drone composition, a practice that started with the cyclical & shimmering tones of Something Is Missing.

Inspired by The Durutti Collumn, John Fahey, Vincent Gallo, Azalia Snail and David Grubbs, and many others, Christian Naujoks breaks the boundaries between songwriting and minimalism, folk music and contemporary art. The recordings at Electric Avenue Studios were accompanied by engineering master Tobias Levin, known for his works on Kreidler, Faust, Felix Kubin, Pantha Du Prince & The Bell Laboratory, just to name a few. With Wave, Naujoks and Levin created a sound-seductive state of the art production, ten post-minimalist guitar pieces with an appearance of the artist’s signature piano style on two of the songs.

Christian Naujoks recently worked on productions with his band Sky Walking (with RVDS and Lawrence) and released a piano tape on Martin Hossbach‘s imprint. After a series of concerts at Berlin’s Berghain and HAU, the Golden Pudel Club in Hamburg, performances and collaborations around the globe including Israel, Mexico, Vietnam and the Philippines, he returned back to his studio in Hamburg in 2015 where the Wave started.

After several studio sessions in the cold and charming winter of the Swiss Alps, Abry and Weber were driven deeper and deeper into some microcosm of sound to almost cut the edge to the myth.
A truly unconventional structure of slowly growing beats hold this universe which came from the cold mountains together. Mostly recorded in that white out background of the Alps it was clear from the beginning- a unique project will come one day. Now Ursprung is here and lets us forget time and memory. Stephan Abry and Hendrik Weber wonder “What Is This? We actually don’t know at all but it is new and wonderful!“
