Fabrizio Lapiana‘s Attic Music label reaches release number 20 on the main series with a new EP from the boss himself: Collective Chaos features remixes from fellow Italian techno luminaries Neel & Laertes.

Rome’s Lapiana has been a vital voice in the global techno underground for more than 10 years now. His Attic Music label has played a key part in that, while his own evocative techno soundscapes have come on the likes of M_Rec ltd, Figure Jams, ARTS and Out-Er. This is his first outing of 2020 and is a superbly stylish techno trip.

Opener Crystal is deep, drawn out techno with perfectly smooth and supple drum programming that soon gets you in a state of hypnosis. Subtle synth loops rise up through the mix as things grow more urgent, and once the percussion joins you’re utterly locked. The title track is a more turbulent and edgy affair that sound tracks a dystopian urban wasteland – the synths are riddled with static, the hurried drums are punchy and there is an urgency in the molten synth lines that keeps you right on the edge of your seat.

Sound sculptor Neel runs Spazio Disponibile with collaborative partner Donato Dozzy and has an impeccable knack for sound design. Here he links with Laertes (half of Modern Heads with Dino Sabatini), a Mental Modern and Concrete Records associate who produces artful techno. Together, they remix Collective Chaos into a dark and moody techno roller with glitchy textures and high speed synth lines that sweep you off your feet.

Closing out this terrific trip is Koyuk, a Millsian adventure into an intergalactic techno future, with polyphonic synths rippling above a rubbery drum line that is both propulsive and pensive. This is high grade, perfectly distilled and meditative techno from some of Italy’s finest exports.

Greyscale lures a mythical name to the label’s roster list for it’s first release of 2020.

Mike Schommer, co-founder of the fabled Deepchord label with Rod Modell, has recently made a return to producing after a more than decade long hiatus. With his second straight vocal-centric project here titled Come Home, Mike is breaking molds in the dub techno genre that few others can succeed at. The multi-talented Milly James lends her distinct voice and positive lyrics in a way that supports the music in a fantastic way much like Tikiman did with Main Street Records and Rhythm & Sound many years ago. The pairing is natural and perfectly balanced throughout the EP with neither stepping on each other’s bandwidth. The beats are particularly striking and the dubbed out washes are subliminal and very catchy.

The title track Come Home will have everyone looking for the dance floor while Breathe” & “Cut You Down are steeped in traditional dub sounds. This record has something for everyone. Deepchord‘s Ocean remix of Breathe by the amazing Rod Modell completes the 4 tracker with a return to the roots of the genre they so much helped define. Mike Schommer and Rod Modell together once again on the same release. Come Home truly has a unique and special meaning here. 2020 is kicking off in grand style for Greyscale with one of Mike Schommer‘s most personal releases yet!

It’s awesome to have Mike back active and a pleasure to have him on Greyscale. Lovingly released on 180 gram white vinyl with beautiful photography by Kristina Petrosiene. A must have for aficionados of true dub sounds.

Over the years, it’s been vital for Mortellaro to maintain a more backgrounded presence with Stroboscopic Artefacts, allowing the music and artists to develop without his involvement appearing too closely in the frame. This EP, however, is a chance for him to boldly toast some of the label’s standout music, as Stroboscopic Artefacts marks ten years of challenging contemporary techno’s conventions.

Caustic, dense and centred around complex but exquisitely executed percussive motifs and driven, rising sequences – many would argue an alliance between Shifted’s heady, monochrome recordings and Lucy’s beloved Stroboscopic Artefacts label is long overdue. The music draws on much of the British producer’s previous work, assembled carefully using a characteristic sonic palette – but as ever, Brewer finds fresh space between sounds – showing off a tentatively more extroverted side to his work.

Title track The Light Touch is perhaps one of Shifted’s more diosyncratic pieces. Instantly recognisable with it’s heavily granular finish and subtle shifts in delay and reverb composition, the track is rich with groove and moves relentlessly across it’s five minute run time. Seel showcases the artist’s talent for building tension with minimal elements – built around a single warping lead, noise tracks drift in and out of the mix to generate effective builds and subtle releases.

EP closer, Mixen, riffs on it’s predecessor’s approach but strips back the percussive elements further and ups the ante with searing drone signals rising up above the lead sequence driving the track. As ever, Brewer’s musical output looks to the heart of the genre – remaining true to purist sensibilities that favour economy of sonic components and studio prowess over unnecessary fanfare, but all the while forging new ground, refining a genuinely personal aesthetic. A powerful debut on a label in fine form that represents some of the best of the British artist’s work.

Alessandro Cortini‘s one-take live recording is a lesson in classical ambient music. Telefon Tel Aviv‘s remix is timelessly modern and extremely delicate sound design. Rather opposite concepts are coming from Surachai‘s brutal pattern design and Kangding Ray‘s expressive and analogously saturated repetitions for the dance floor.

Ninth instalment of Redscale. Grad_U with a masterpiece of dub techno.

Holdback, an unexpected twist of events for followers of Redscale, is actually a bold step forward in terms of pace and light. The enticing chords work like a magnet, and the potential of the lady on the mic is no lower than that one of a siren. The personal weapons of Grad_U, the most powerful of which are the embracing loops, are of course out there, indicating the producer’s inner spirit and roots.

Picking up where Holdback left off, Outwards from Laniakea is a statement more rugged, yet as absolute as the message on side A. It’s an invitation to put that jacket back to the cloakroom, switch off that phone and let yourself go, again and again. It’s, once again, a compelling statement against conformity.
