DEATHPROD and BIOSPHERE | Stator

In 1998, Biosphere and Deathprod – Geir Jenssen and Helge Sten, respectively – released Nordheim Transformed: a split album where both artists transformed the original experimental music of (fellow Norwegian) Anne Nordheim’s Electric (1974) almost beyond recognition. It’s not completely clear whether Geir and Helge actually worked together on this album – it’s a split, where different tracks are each credited to one of the two artists – but from its coherence it’s clear that they at least influenced each other greatly in producing this album. Nordheim Transformed is a landmark album in both artists’ catalogue – as well as[…]

RAPOON | Songs From the End of the World

Robin Storey otherwise known as Rapoon, and ex member and co-founder of legendary northern group Zoviet France, comes back in the frozen lands of Glacial Movements after his vision of an Europe covered by ice in Time Frost (2007). The English artist this time faces a theme recently discovered, and that could dramatically change the destiny of our planet. Evoking visions of mad scientists, French researchers are set to revive a mega-virus dormant for 30,000 years that they discovered in the permafrost of the Russian Arctic. The researchers, from the French National Center for Scientific Research, say they will take[…]

BRAVE TIMBERS | Hope (Gizeh records)

Hope is the new album by Newcastle-based Brave Timbers, originally the solo-project of multi-instrumentalist Sarah Kemp. This is their second album following 2010’s For Every Day You Lost, which quickly sold out its limited pressing. Sarah is joined on this album by Andrew Scrogham and together they recorded Hope in a Victorian concert hall in Salford, UK. Their music has also been featured on Second Language‘s Minute Papillon and Music & Migration compilations alongside Peter Broderick, Vashti Bunyan, Hauschka and Dustin O’Halloran. Hope is a reflective, pastoral album that carefully builds its ambient landscapes. These eleven instrumental compositions demonstrate the[…]

Electronic Recordings From Maui Jungle Vol 1

Melting our minds for over two decades with his beat-based productions, this time renowned techno-producer Anthony Child aka Surgeon is putting the fundamental components of electronic sound production to the fore. Focussing on the development of timbre and texture, Child creates exquisite drones, that give an insight in his improvisatory sensibility and dig deep into the potentials of modular synthesis, As the title already indicates, it’s a very special setting that he has chosen for this endeavour: The jungle of Maui seems to have acted as a stimulus for this exercise in concentration and trance. The intertwining of the electronic[…]

KERRIDGE | Fatal Light Attraction (Downwards)

Kerridge returns to Downwards in 2016 with the custom-built electronics of Fatal Light Attraction following last year’s incursions on his own Contort label. The project premiered at Berlin’s Atonal 2015 edition, featuring Kerridge working alongside Andrej Boleslavsky & Maria Júdová to create an intense, kinetic shadowplay synched as an illusive counterpart to the music and performance. As Kerridge‘s 3rd long player, it marks a more fluid, or effluent, refinement of his sound, blurring the boundaries between organic audio sources and custom-constructed synths to flooding the senses with waves of bristling, oxidising industrial tones and coruscating texturhythm seemingly intent on separating[…]
