Hope is the new album by Newcastle-based Brave Timbers, originally the solo-project of multi-instrumentalist Sarah Kemp. This is their second album following 2010’s For Every Day You Lost, which quickly sold out its limited pressing. Sarah is joined on this album by Andrew Scrogham and together they recorded Hope in a Victorian concert hall in Salford, UK. Their music has also been featured on Second Language‘s Minute Papillon and Music & Migration compilations alongside Peter Broderick, Vashti Bunyan, Hauschka and Dustin O’Halloran.
Hope is a reflective, pastoral album that carefully builds its ambient landscapes. These eleven instrumental compositions demonstrate the minimal clarity of Brave Timbers, the piano and violin circling one another, creating a sense of space and terrain. There’s also dreamy timelessness within the music’s flow and weave, from Swimming in the Isar‘s gauzy atmospheres to the brittle warmth of The Well Worn Path. Hope has a purity and a simplicity which Brave Timbers bathe in a golden, spectral light.
Melting our minds for over two decades with his beat-based productions, this time renowned techno-producer Anthony Child aka Surgeon is putting the fundamental components of electronic sound production to the fore. Focussing on the development of timbre and texture, Child creates exquisite drones, that give an insight in his improvisatory sensibility and dig deep into the potentials of modular synthesis, As the title already indicates, it’s a very special setting that he has chosen for this endeavour: The jungle of Maui seems to have acted as a stimulus for this exercise in concentration and trance.
The intertwining of the electronic instrument that meets the sublime sounds of nature, opens up an intimate resonant chamber. Birds, insects and raindrops are allowed to break through, while you can sense the thick, humid air and deep colours of the surrounding resonating in the pastose synth lines. Some tracks offer beautifully built overtone-drones, others are structured by playful arpeggios that create a shining bright texture and seduce us into a state of disintegration. At the same time Child gives priority to the graininess of the instrument to emphasise the haptic quality and inner tension of the sounds themselves. In the end these minimalist procedures have been compiled to an unpretentious collection of sonic and atmospheric micro-jewels, inviting us to give ourselves over entirely and exclusively to listening.

Kerridge returns to Downwards in 2016 with the custom-built electronics of Fatal Light Attraction following last year’s incursions on his own Contort label.
The project premiered at Berlin’s Atonal 2015 edition, featuring Kerridge working alongside Andrej Boleslavsky & Maria Júdová to create an intense, kinetic shadowplay synched as an illusive counterpart to the music and performance. As Kerridge‘s 3rd long player, it marks a more fluid, or effluent, refinement of his sound, blurring the boundaries between organic audio sources and custom-constructed synths to flooding the senses with waves of bristling, oxidising industrial tones and coruscating texturhythm seemingly intent on separating flesh from bone. It’s evil stuff, all seven tracks of it, forming a closed feedback system of guttural, choking frequencies and cardiac arrhythymatics.

Having already proven that he is capable of maintaining sonic quality and distinction over the course of a full original program, Chevel (a.k.a. Dario Tronchin) now makes his debut LP Blurse for Stroboscopic Artefacts.
His other Stroboscopic Artefacts contributions have already hinted that a more complete exposition of his unique inner world would surface, and here it is at last. Over the course of his young career, Chevel has gained a mastery over several compositional elements: Polaroid-like slow melodic fades, sharp ricocheting beats, and simply making one’s headphones feel like a viable means of physical transportation. All of these elements come into play shortly after the needle hits the grooves of ‘Comb’ a euphoric introductory track marked by a spectral panning sequence and by beats chopped with a culinary expert’s sense of elegance.

Scene Delete is the first Late Night Tales release of 2016, a very special project by Sasha. Imagine listening to music inspired by Frahm, Richter and Steve Reich, but made by one of the UK’s leading house and techno DJs. Away from the hubbub of the club, the craziness of Ibiza, there’s a contemplative side to everybody. Forget the beats and the sweat and the billowing anthems; this quiet, undulating, at times pastoral piece is less about songs and anthems and more about texture and atmosphere. Scene Delete is a side of Sasha you’ve never heard before.

Giorgio Gigli achieves his debut album after a personal path grown with his work on Zooloft Records. In the same way his dj sets reflect the spirit of that evolution. He explores sophisticated ambient layers as much as obsessive and hypnotic techno landscapes.
The Right Place Where Not To Be is the title of this first full-length sonic movie, a work emerging from the depth of his soul that filters, in a proper way, every musical input he developed over the years. A scenario where human and animal life-form perished and only plants and minerals survived. Giorgio performs that concept writing an ultra-detailed soundtrack, using rich textures that hide secret acoustics, nhanced by alienating atmosphere that captivate the listener.
Field Rotation was founded 2008 by the electronic music composer and producer Christoph Berg in Kiel, Northern Germany. Experimenting with electronic and classical elements this project combines floating soundscapes with electroacoustic colours to create minimalistic soundtracks renouncing of visualisation but interacting with the listeners emotions and feelings. As a violinist and pianist Christoph combines the synthetic sound engineering with natural sounds to communicate his short acoustic tales and impressions.

Reversed is the fourth album from French composer/sound designer Franck Zaragoza and his ever-expressive Ocoeur nom de plume. The opening swell and passionate piano that precedes it sets the tone for what could very well be Zaragoza‘s most personally ardent set of compositions to date. Zaragoza thoughtfully augments his modern solo piano compositions with creative, some might even say organic, sound design and meticulous melancholic string harmonies. Reversed is without a doubt a truly personal listening experience meant to be absorbed again and again.

Once again, Maps and Diagrams produces another harmonic long-player; Delta this time for VoxxoV Records, with 12 tracks of hazy-flavoured electronics and defined acoustic distinctions. Over the past half decade, Manning has been behind a series of increasingly profound explorations into light and movement. These installation works seek to reveal spectrum and frequency in patterns that often go unrecognised.
With Interlacing, his first LP for Room40, Manning showcases his deeply personal sonic works. Having been an active experimentalist for much of the 00s across Australia, with projects such as 4 Layers Of Nine, Sky Needle and Faber Castell, Manning has amassed a collection of work that draws on broken electronics, hand made instruments and custom electronics.
“Japan is where I first started getting interested in making electronics,” Ross explains of his first experiments conducted whilst he was living and teaching in Japan, “I would go into Akihabara and all the electronics stalls. Japan is where I saw all this amazing music and art and also got the chance to start building and experimenting.”
Max Würden invites to Transit, an intense ambient trip through lush sonic felds as well as dark sound tunnels. Atmospheric feld recordings invite their listeners to stay a while – right before the dub beats reliably push the tempo. So get in, take a seat and let yourself go. Your journey begins here.
Rafael Anton Irisarri’s A Fragile Geography is a record cast in a climate of unsteadiness and transition, reflecting upon the current state of everyday living.
Recorded over the past two years, the record bares the marks of difficult terrains – personal, political, social and cultural. It tips its hat to the complex and unpredictable dynamics of the contemporary world, correlating concerns both macro and micro. Compositionally the music mirrors the tensions of contemporary America, contrasting passages of great beauty and calm with harrowing waves of density and pressure.

Widely considered one of the hallmarks of dub-infused electronic music, as well as an endless resource of inspiration and awe for generations of electronic music artists and enthusiasts, Vibrant Forms II by Fluxion is now being reissued by Subwax Bcn. Originally released on Mark Ernestus and Moritz von Oswald’s revered Chain Reaction label in 2000, the many calls for a reissue of this cavernous masterpiece has finally been answered by the Barcelona imprint.
