Who could’ve predicted neo-classical’s sudden surge in popularity ? Call it what you will – modern composition, ambient, sound art, or call it all three—it seems a greater portion of listeners than ever before have cottoned onto the delicate, slow-burning beauty of what, until recently, has been a kind of best-kept secret, preserved for those in the know. As is often the case when a style of music—if you can generalize it—catches aflame, one artist drove this upwards spike.

Nils Frahm, with his clever intermingling of electronics and classical tropes, has become its figurehead, (alongside a handful of others, like Max Richter), and this form of composition has had support from some prominent figures, such as the UK’s taste-making DJ, Mary Anne Hobbs. But if any one label can be said to be pushing the scene, it’s Frahm’s home imprint, Erased Tapes. The label has been quietly releasing an exceptional and very particular sound since 2006. Though counting more overtly dance acts among its stable, like Rival Consoles, for the most part, that intersection where machines meet human emotion, and instrumentation meets programming, has been their specialism. Ólafur Arnalds, who recently, like Nils, created an edition of the Late Night Tales compilation series, is among their rising names, as is Ben Lukas Boysen.

The start of the summer has been a joyful one, many festivals and gathering around the world, special moments shared with our beloved artists and you all.

And back at the studio there’s much going on as well, Scann-Tec spent two weeks with us working on « secret projects » with AES Dana and the new DTS format we’ll be offering soon for our releases, Mizoo and Mnnsk came to finalise the Greenosophy Chapter II compilation and Arnaud is creating new artworks for reprints of some of your favorite albums.

We’re closing the office and shop for the Summer holiday ; time to recharge our batteries in the sunshine and brainstorm on what fab and fun stuff we’re going to do next.

So from Wednesday 10th to Sunday 28th August there will be no orders shipped at all, no one to pick up the phone or reply to emails, no tea and coffee served at the shop, no brand new records to listen to, absolutely nothing…

Mirror’s Edge Catalyst Soundtrack composed by Solar Fields is out now containing 32 tracks for more than 5 hours of music.
If you’re not familiar with the game, it is a first-person action-adventure in which the player takes control of Faith Connors as she progresses through a futuristic city named Glass. Similar to the original Mirror’s Edge, players traverse the city using aspects of urban exploration and parkour movements to complete missions and evade or fight enemies.

SEGUE | Over the Mountains (Silent Season)

Over the Mountains is Segue‘s second full length release with Silent Season, the long time coming follow up to 2013’s Pacifica.

In a similar vein to Pacifica, Over the Mountains transports the listener to a different place and time, somewhere deep under a forest canopy on an unknown path leading to a majestic mountain vista somewhere above the clouds. The only thing keeping you going is knowing that things will only get better, because you never know what’s waiting over the next hill.

Imagine you are being invited to the studio of a visionary, and get to discover some brand new futuristic experiments along with tracks made 25 years ago that sound as if they’ve been made yesterday. Well that’s what the careful listener who plunges himself into Pink Flamingos from start to finish should feel like.

The intent in the beginning, was to focus on the more recent, experimental side of In Aeternam Vale‘s work, and to look at his work through an angle that would be complementary to some recent techno releases on Jealous God or 80’s gems on Minimal Wave. Only a few visits to his studio in Lyon were decisive. Imagine seeing the history of 30 years of electronic music flash through your ears, just in a few hours. IAV has been exploring new grounds and sometimes even pioneering new styles and subgenres several times, with literally hundreds of tracks to listen to. Words are not enough to describe this record’s digger absolute dream : the discovery of a secret parallel universe where so much music has been created and kept under the radar.

Brian Eno returns to Warp with his new solo recording The Ship.

An elegantly composed album split half in the vein of his Grammy nominated Warp album Lux and his early passage into background sound exploration, Ambient 1: Music For Airports and half in the more song-based experimentation first explored on his early albums Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy) & Another Green World.

Mapped out over four parts, these delicately laid out songs slowly pass between discreet passages and more vocalised pop tunes that forty-three years after his debut solo album show that Brian Eno is (not that there was ever any doubt whatsoever) is one of the finest musicians to ever grace a piece of vinyl.
