JASON SHARP | A Boat Upon Its Blood (Constellation)

JASON SHARP | A Boat Upon Its Blood (Constellation)

Jason Sharp has been a fixture of Montréal’s experimental/improv scene for many years, chiefly as a saxophonist exploring drone and durational music, while also collaborating in a wide variety of jazz, avant and contemporary music ensembles – he has several prior links to Constellation, notably as part of Sam Shalabi’s Land Of Kush orchestra and Matana RobertsCoin Coin Chapter One band, and as a session player on Thee Silver Mt Zion’s 2010 album Kollaps Tradixionales.

Sharp’s work as a composer, conductor and band leader in his own right is now featured on A Boat Upon Its Blood, the first album-length recording to be released under his own name: a bracingly meditative multi-movement instrumental work that charts a highly compelling arc of shifting energies and intensities, tracing a heterogeneous cycle of minimalisms and maximalisms. Using custom-built equipment to translate breath and heart rate into variegated sonic triggers, along with other modes of signal processing and in tandem with traditional instrumentation, A Boat Upon Its Blood featuresSharp’s own reed playing and contributions from a few guest musicians, particularly Josh Zubot on violin and Joe Grass on pedal steel guitar.

GAËTAN GROMER | Noise Level (Voxxov Records)

The new release from VoxxoV records is available. Gaëtan Gromer Noise Level is an attempt of sound illustration of this idea and, like in the short story, the library holds a central place. All compositions in this disc are built from real sounds recorded in ordinary libraries. After transformation, these heterogeneous sounds blend into a new environment, where a coffee machine might as well be a melodic instrument and the sounds of book handling, a percussion set. The creative gesture then represents a link between the concrete manifestations of reality and the imaginaries…

MERRIN KARRAS | Apex (A Strangely Isolated Place)

MERRIN KARRAS | Apex (A Strangely Isolated Place)

Inspired by the sounds of artists like Klaus Schulze, Biosphere and Abul Mogard, and finding renewed focus in creating without external pressures or deadlines, Gregoriy‘s ambient experimentation emerged, fully-formed, as Merrin Karras. His debut album under this moniker, Apex, is released on A Strangely Isolated Place.

Written and recorded in two Berlin winters, it’s a record driven by a widescreen contrast between celestial beauty and engulfing black hole intent. Flawlessly produced, Vangelis panorama and vintage sci-fi exist in a space where drums and rhythmic elements have been willfully stripped out – and where the synths can truly breathe.

STEVE REICH | Four Organs / Phase Patterns

This record, reissued by the San Francisco-based label Superior Viaduct, was originally released in 1970 by Shandar, a small French label that made an outsized impact on American musical modernism: in its decade-long existence, the imprint managed to release works by Albert Ayler, La Monte Young,Cecil Taylor, Sun Ra, and many others. Like any good champions of the musical avant-garde, they were eventually punished by fate: in 1979, a flood destroyed most of their original vinyl stock, effectively ending the enterprise.

But for a while, places like Shandar were safe harbor for then-misfits like Reich. The two pieces here,Four Organs and Phase Patterns, come from an era of Reich’s work when he was still in an obsessively scientific mode, boring down on a single capital-I Idea to extract from it whatever secrets might be unlocked from it. The idea here was his first big one, and the one that he remains most associated with: If you took two tones, set them apart from each other, and then moved them in and out of frequency incrementally, you could push open a gate of perception. The idea began with tape loops, but Reichsoon moved it into live instrumentation, and then pushed its way into larger forces, where that original idea could be heard more as a whisper more than a shriek. Here, it is the work of four monomaniacally focused musicians: The Farfisas are played by Steve Reich and Philip Glass, joined by Arthur “Art” Bixler Murphy and Steve Chambers, while Jon Gibson supplies the steady maraca shakes…(Jayson Greene | Pitchfork)

NESS | A Personal Voyage Ep (Mental Modern)

These walls have made us the beings we are. They have listened and echoed, our words, our creed, our hate. These walls have tied down the souls of us; they made us insane, hysterics, in observing defenceless, uncredulous that there was not, any reaction. We can only halt us, after having used up our nails, over these walls now rough because of our shouts, our burned hopes, by our passions damned; by our minds, dinned. None could ever help us, because as slaves we feel and now we are, of these cursed walls and of these walls damned that, however still give a sense, to our cold life.

ORPHX and RROSE | Summer Solstice Edition

ORPHX and RROSE | Summer Solstice Edition

London based electronic music label Khemia Records announces its second split release vinyl Ep.

Aurora‘ on the Lunar side is a new work created for Khemia by venerable Canadian producers Orphx.
Crepuscular, infrasonic hydro-acoustics submerge padding rhythms, emerging gradually through oscillations and the caustic snarl of static, into a mutant echo chamber of polyrhythmic hypnosis and fractal bleeps to be finally swept away by vast, billowing swathes of spectral harmonics.

Emboli‘, on the Solar Side is a new track written specially for Khemia by the enigmatic sound artistRrose.
Cascades of iridescent particles coruscate against the shadow of an ominous dirge, crashing into a wall of slurred rhythm that opens into a glacial abyss, punctuated by a fearfully insistent whiplash that finally dissolves into a quantum field of bituminous drones.

CHPTR | CHPTR 003

CHPTR | CHPTR 003

Very little is known about CHPTR, other than that the producers behind the alias are two very well known figures from contemporary techno. Their series launched last year with one three-tracker release in October, followed by a similarly formatted one in February of this year. Following on from those, CHPTR 003 takes much the same approach: three cuts of deep atmospheric techno.

JACEK SIENKIEWICZ | Hideland (Recognition)

JACEK SIENKIEWICZ | Hideland (Recognition)

Hideland is the new record by Polish electronic music producer Jacek Sienkiewicz, released precisely one year after Drifting, which largely explored tropes of classical club techno sound. Eight (nine in extended CD version) tracks comprising this album go beyond easy-to-pigeonhole genres, creating a microcosm of utopian sound constructs. Surprisingly unobvious and precisely composed release could be fascinating both for loyal fans and for new listeners looking for threads of experimentalism. It’s another intriguing proposal in Jacek Sienkiewicz’s growing discography, but above all – a laboratory where dreams and artistic visions metamorphose into concrete reality.

Various Artists | Structures And Solutions: 1996-2016 (Blueprint)

Various Artists | Structures And Solutions: 1996-2016 (Blueprint)

James Ruskin and Blueprint are two names synonymous with British techno. Ruskin has never really put into words what makes a Blueprint record, but the label has one the most distinctive catalogues of its era. Aside from the music’s excellent production quality and propensity for detailed sound design, a defining characteristic might be the creeping tension in many of its releases, or the visceral head trip they guarantee.

Blueprint has maintained its identity through a few phases. There were the ’96-’99 years, when Ruskin and Richard Polson were releasing as Outline and Oliver Ho’s funky tribal sound was emerging, and then the ’00s, when Polson left Ruskin’s deep and driving style to crystallise. Polson’s sudden departure in ’06 caused both Blueprint and its owner to take a break, but since 2009 they’ve returned with a clear sense of purpose. The label’s most recent chapter has abandoned its exclusivity in order to widen its purview, bringing on board artists like Lakker, Sigha and Samuel Kerridge. Blueprint has also become a place for old friends like Surgeon and Oliver Ho, and a platform for Ruskin’s collaborations with Regis (as O/V/R) and Mark Broom to bloom.
